Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On 27 February 2026, it was reported in The Straits Times that our Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, affirmed that the government will remain disciplined and continue to balance its budget to protect Singapore’s long-term resilience.

This is something we should never take for granted. I often thank the Lord for a good government in Singapore. When we look around the world, many countries have relied on endless borrowing, running deficits year after year. This has placed tremendous strain on their finances and led to many other economic and social challenges.

But what about our own households?

Today, many families are caught in the endless pursuit of material possessions—faster cars, branded watches, luxury bags. Some even go into debt to sustain such lifestyles. Over time, this creates financial “holes” that become increasingly difficult to patch.

(Proper property investments, when done prudently and without over-leveraging, can be viewed differently. We can explore this in another discussion.)

For now, I would like to suggest a few simple principles to help us plan better financially:

1. Pray for guidance
Seek the Lord’s wisdom and prudence in your financial stewardship. True direction begins with Him.

2. Cultivate a habit of giving
Spending depletes earthly resources, but giving builds eternal treasure. Learn to give generously and faithfully.

3. Be content
Contentment is a powerful safeguard. Learn to live simply. At the end of the day, it is God whom we need most.

4. Spend within your means
There is nothing wrong with enjoying material possessions if you can afford them—but guard against overindulgence.

5. Borrow wisely
Debt should be taken on carefully and for sound reasons, such as prudent investments—not for the pursuit of lifestyle desires.

Perhaps it is time for us to reflect and ensure that our family budgets are balanced, just as our nation strives to do.

May the Lord grant you peace, wisdom, and discipline as you steward the resources He has entrusted to you.

Blessings to you and your family,

David Poh
