Dear Brothers and Sisters,
It’s Chinese New Year again — a beautiful season of celebration, reunion, and renewed connections. For many families, this is the one special time each year when relatives gather, meals are shared, laughter fills the home, and relationships are refreshed.
One cherished tradition that comes with Chinese New Year is the giving of red packets, or ang pow. Married couples bless unmarried children and elders with these little red envelopes, symbolising good fortune, joy, and prosperity.
For young children, this is often the happiest part of the entire celebration. They go around excitedly “collecting” red packets, dreaming of the toys they might buy after the festivities. Some may even learn to save and treasure what they receive.
As parents and adults, we look forward to this opportunity to bless our own children, nieces, nephews, and loved ones. It is a joyful practice of generosity.
But here is a question for us to reflect on:
Do we stop there?
Why not bless beyond our own circle?
If you live in a condominium, perhaps you could bless the security guard on duty at the entrance with a red packet.
If you are taking public transport, why not bless the bus driver?
If you are dining out and being served, could you bless the waiter or waitress who has been working through the holiday season?
To us, it may be less than the cost of a meal. But to someone else, it could be a meaningful blessing that brightens their entire day.
The Lord has blessed us, not only for our own enjoyment, but so that we may become a blessing to others.
This Chinese New Year, let us not only bless our families, but also our “neighbours” — those around us whom God has placed in our path.
May the Lord bless you and your family abundantly this Chinese New Year and always. Gong Xi Fa Cai! 🧧✨
