Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Today I would like to bring your attention to this verse:
Proverbs 23:24 (NIV)
“The father of a righteous child has great joy; a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him.”
If you are a parent, you will know that one of the greatest challenges in life is raising children yet at the same time, it is also one of the greatest sources of joy.
There is a special kind of joy when our children grow up to be godly, righteous, and wise.
This kind of joy goes beyond achievements, grades, or material success. It is a deep satisfaction that comes from knowing they are walking in the ways of the Lord.
There are many aspects to raising a child in godliness, but today I would like to focus on one area: financial stewardship.
I would like to share a simple personal experience. I have a five-year-old daughter, and I believe it is important to start her journey in biblical financial stewardship from a young age.
Even though I rarely use cash nowadays, since most places accept electronic payments I still make it a point to carry small notes like $2 or $10 with me.
Firstly, this allows my daughter to buy tissue packs from elderly ladies who sell them along the streets. It becomes a practical way for her to learn compassion and generosity.
Secondly, I let her place these notes into the tithe boxes in church, even though I personally tithe electronically. This small act helps her understand the importance of giving to God.
Beyond the actions, I also take time to explain to her why we do these things. I remind her that even in an affluent society like Singapore, there are still people in need and we are called to help them. I also teach her that everything we have ultimately comes from God, and giving is part of our worship.
These may seem like small steps, but they are seeds being planted.
There are many simple and intentional things we can do as parents to shape our children’s values from a young age. Over time, these small habits can grow into a life of faithfulness, wisdom, and generosity.
What we hope to see in our children tomorrow must begin with what we do today.
Blessings to you and your family,
David Poh
