Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Last week, we talked about giving with a tax exemption in mind.

This week, let us continue on the subject of giving by discussing another motivation that often accompanies charitable donations, giving in return for public recognition.

Many organizations acknowledge their donors by displaying their names on plaques, buildings, reports, or websites. I cannot fault this practice. It may be one way to encourage generosity, and many worthy causes have benefited from it.

However, as believers, we should examine our own hearts. Why are we giving?

The Lord Jesus taught us:

"But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." (Matthew 6:3–4)

Our giving should never be driven by the desire for recognition, praise, or having our names displayed publicly. Over the years, I have personally met people who were motivated to give because their generosity would be made known to others. While I do not question their sincerity, Scripture invites us to pursue an even higher motivation.

Our giving is ultimately between us and the Lord.

When we give in secret, we are declaring that we seek God's approval rather than man's applause. We are not trying to glorify ourselves but to glorify Him. Whether anyone else knows about our giving is of little importance. The One who truly matters already knows.

Haha, after reading this, are you going to stop writing your cheque?

I am confident you will pass the test.

You know why you give. You give because the Lord first loved us and gave His life for us. We give out of love for Him, love for His people, obedience to His Word, and gratitude for His grace.

After all, it is not really our money that we are giving away. Everything belongs to the Lord. We are merely stewards entrusted with His resources for a season. What a privilege it is to use what He has placed in our hands to advance His kingdom and bless others.

May the Lord continue to bless you abundantly, not merely so that you may have more, but so that you may have more opportunities to be generous for His good works and for His glory alone.

Peace and joy always,

David Poh
