Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today, let’s touch on the topic of giving with tax exemptions in mind.

Let’s be honest. Many people give with the intention of claiming a tax deduction. They may reason, "Since I am giving anyway, why not give to a recipient that qualifies for a tax benefit?"

In Singapore, donations to approved Institutions of a Public Character (IPCs) currently enjoy a 2.5 times tax deduction. Many other countries also provide some form of tax relief for charitable giving.

On the surface, it seems like generosity with a return. Some may even say it is "killing two birds with one stone."

I cannot fault such thinking. After all, one is simply trying to maximize the value of one's giving.

However, as believers, I believe we are called to see giving differently.

Everything we possess belongs to the Lord. We are merely stewards of His resources. If that is true, then it should not be us deciding where to give based primarily on personal benefit. Instead, we should seek the Lord's direction.

Before making a donation, take time to pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you to the person or ministry He wants you to support. Even if that organization does not qualify for a tax deduction, you give anyway because you are obeying the true Owner of those resources.

We are simply managers carrying out the instructions of our CEO, the Lord Himself.

When our giving is directed by God rather than by personal gain, it becomes an act of worship. We give with no strings attached, seeking only to honour Him. I believe this is the kind of generosity that delights the Lord.

May the Lord grant each of us a generous heart that gives willingly, joyfully, and obediently, wherever He leads.

Blessings,

David Poh
