Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Recently, I have had more friends and brothers in Christ approaching me about their inheritance challenges. It is becoming a common and deeply sensitive issue.

I also came across an article in The Straits Times dated 26 February 2026 titled “$522m inheritance rocks Malaysia’s Genting dynasty.” The headline speaks for itself—immense wealth, yet significant conflict within the family.

But let us not think this only happens among the wealthy.

Inheritance can become a problem even when there is very little to pass down. I have personally heard of nine siblings disputing over a modest 3-room HDB flat worth less than a million dollars. In the end, relationships were broken—not because of abundance, but because of the heart.

Family bonds, built over decades, can unravel quickly when money enters the picture.

That is why I want to gently remind all brothers and sisters:

Start planning early.

Think the unthinkable. Plan for the unexpected.

Many families remain cordial—until the day comes to divide assets. What was once peaceful can suddenly turn tense. Often, the root problem is not greed alone, but lack of clarity, communication, and preparation.

It is important to communicate your wishes clearly to your family.
Explain your intentions. Have honest conversations—especially with those whom you sense may struggle or disagree later.

Yes, these conversations are not easy. Many avoid them because they feel uncomfortable or premature. But avoiding the issue does not remove it—it simply passes the burden to the next generation.

And too often, that burden becomes conflict.

Most inheritance problems arise because people assume, “It won’t happen in my family.” Others delay, hoping things will sort themselves out. But without guidance, clarity, and unity, families are left to navigate emotions and expectations on their own.

So let us be wise stewards—not just of our finances, but of our relationships.

Face it now. Settle it now.

And choose whether you will leave behind a legacy of peace—or a trail of division.

May the wisdom of the Lord guide you in all things.

Blessings

David Poh
