Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Let us revisit the topic of inheritance again this week.
I spoke to one brother in Christ recently. He is handling some inheritance matters with his siblings after his mum passed on.
He shared that the siblings are having some “issues” over the division of their parents’ assets. He mentioned that many times, problems arise when the assets to be divided amount to millions.
Haha. I am glad for him. He is going to receive millions of dollars soon. It is a “happy problem”, some may say. I prayed for them to resolve all their differences in an amicable and Godly manner, and to enjoy this inheritance with gratitude.
What I want to highlight is this: inheritance is not only a problem when millions of dollars are involved.
Even a small amount can divide, or worse, break a family.
I have heard enough stories. One involved 9 siblings sharing a modest HDB 3-room flat left by their parents, worth only about S$400,000. That works out to roughly S$45,000 per share. Yet this small amount was enough to break the family apart.
Haha. Big or small amount, it is the same issue. The problem is not the size of the inheritance but the condition of the human heart.
As the Bible says:
1 Timothy 6:10 (NIV)
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”
That is why it is good to start preparing for inheritance matters early. Pray about it. Ask the Lord for wisdom to handle it well.
If you are one of the receivers, practice restraint, protect family harmony, and act Biblically. Do not let temporary wealth destroy relationships that God has given to you.
If you are the giver, pray and pray for wisdom to distribute it correctly. The resources that the Lord has entrusted to you are for His Kingdom and for your stewardship, not to become a stumbling block that harms your family.
Sometimes, it may even be better to give more away for the Lord’s Kingdom than to leave behind something that causes division among loved ones.
Inheritance is not just about passing on money. It is about passing on peace, wisdom, and a Godly legacy.
May the Lord grant you wisdom to handle this well,
David Poh
