Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Let’s reflect on another report in the Business Times dated February 21, 2026: “Retirement isn’t a finale—it’s a strategic pivot.”
I agree with this perspective, and I would like to consider it from a Biblical lens.
In Singapore, many retire at around age 65, with a life expectancy of about 85 years. That leaves 20 years or more ahead. The question then is: what do we do with this season of life? Is it merely about golfing, strolling in the park, or spending time with grandchildren?
To begin with, we should ask: what does the Bible say about retirement? Interestingly, it says nothing about it. In fact, from a Biblical standpoint, there is no concept of retirement.
Serving the Lord is a lifelong calling.
Of course, there may be different views on whether we are serving the Lord full-time or part-time during our working years. Some would say that in whatever we do, whether in secular work or ministry, we are serving the Lord wholeheartedly, and therefore already serving Him full-time.
However, for those who see themselves as serving the Lord part-time while holding a secular job, then retirement presents a powerful shift. It becomes an opportunity to serve the Lord fully, without the constraints of financial responsibilities and work commitments.
What a privilege that is.
There is no better time than now to serve the Lord with greater devotion. With more time in hand, apart from a few rounds of golf perhaps—we can invest our lives more intentionally in His Kingdom.
If you are approaching retirement, it may be time to rethink your plans. Rather than slowing down, perhaps this is the season to press on even more for the Lord.
We are called to serve Him until the day we meet Him in heaven.
Let us remember the words of Jesus: “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few.” There is still much to be done.
Play your part. Be willing to be used by the Lord, even into old age. After all, God began to use Moses in a significant way when he was 80 years old.
May you find deep joy and purpose in serving the Lord in every season of life.
Blessings,
David Poh
