Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Recently, I noticed someone who had always displayed a good attitude at work. If I were to rate her work attitude on a scale of 1 to 10, I would have given her an 8. However, after she tendered her resignation, her attitude seemed to change. Now, I would probably rate it a 5.
Haha. To many people, this may seem perfectly normal. After all, if someone is leaving the company, why continue putting in the same level of effort?
But as believers, should we see it that way? Let us examine this from a biblical perspective.
First, we must believe that the Bible is the truth, the whole truth. Our opinions and the world's practices should always be measured against God's Word.
The Bible tells us:
"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men." (Colossians 3:23)
If we truly believe that we are ultimately working for the Lord rather than merely for a human employer, then why should our attitude change simply because we are leaving the company?
Shouldn't we maintain the same diligence, integrity, and excellence until our very last day?
After all, Jesus is our true Master. If we say we are working for Him, then our commitment should remain constant regardless of whether we have one year left or one day left.
The Bible also reminds us that our lives should glorify God.
"So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Our workplace is one of the greatest mission fields God has placed us in. Our colleagues observe not only what we say, but also how we work. If our standards suddenly drop after submitting our resignation, what testimony are we leaving behind?
Fellow believers may become discouraged. Worse still, those who have yet to know Christ may conclude that Christians cannot be trusted. Instead of glorifying the Lord, we risk bringing dishonour to His name.
Personally, I believe a Christian should give his or her very best until the final working day. Finish well. Leave with integrity. Let your last impression be as honourable as your first.
Perhaps you have not enjoyed working in your company. Maybe your supervisor has treated you unfairly. Perhaps you are counting down the days until you leave.
Even then, once you have tendered your resignation, let the matter rest. Continue to fulfil your responsibilities faithfully.
After all, your employer will continue paying your salary until your final day of service.
More importantly, Scripture reminds us that it is ultimately the Lord who rewards us.
"You are serving the Lord Christ... It is the Lord Christ you are serving." (Colossians 3:24)
Your salary may come through your human employer, but your true Provider is the Lord. If He faithfully provides for you until your last day, should we not faithfully serve Him until that very same day?
May we be believers who are known for finishing well, serving faithfully, and honouring Christ in every season of our working lives.
May peace and joy be with you in your employment,
David Poh
