Dear Brothers and Sisters,

In a newspaper article in The Straits Times on 26 February 2026, it was reported that the top 1% of Singapore’s households hold about 14% of the total household wealth, while the top 5% hold around 33%.

The situation varies across countries. It is even more pronounced in the United States, where the top 1% holds about 37% of the wealth and the top 5% holds around 64%. In other words, the top 5% controls almost two-thirds of the wealth.

What do these numbers show? They illustrate inequality in society an uneven distribution of wealth. Personally, I believe this situation is worsening in many parts of the world and the gap between the rich and the poor is widening.

In Singapore, we thank God for a good government. The authorities have stated that they are monitoring wealth inequality closely to ensure that it moves in the right direction. If necessary, policies will be adjusted to address it. By God’s grace, the situation in Singapore remains better than in many other countries.

At the same time, we should recognize that God has never designed society to have complete equality. For a society to function, people take on different roles, some lead organizations, others operate buses, teach in schools, run businesses, or serve in many other ways.

However, in this broken world, the gap between the very rich and the very poor can become excessively wide. On one hand, there are individuals with such immense wealth that it could last for many generations. On the other hand, in some parts of the world, children are still dying because they drink unclean water.

What is the ultimate solution? The complete restoration of justice and righteousness will only come when Jesus returns.

But what can we do in the meantime?

Even though governments play an important role, not every country addresses this issue seriously. Therefore, there is still much that individuals can do. We can give generously, to build churches, support schools, improve infrastructure, fund education, support charities, and help those in need. The opportunities to make a difference are endless.

Have you done your part? There is no need to tell anyone. As the Lord teaches us, we should not even let our left hand know what our right hand is doing when we give.

May the peace of the Lord be with you and your family.

Blessings,

David Poh
