Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Months back, we discussed a report in The Business Times highlighting that 67% of high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) in Singapore are concerned that their wealth may not last beyond one generation. On 21 February 2026, the paper revisited this issue in an article titled, “Why two-thirds of Singapore's wealthy fear their legacy won’t last and what must change.”
The article rightly pointed out that to address this concern, there must be a shift in mindset: from asking “How much capital can I accumulate?” to “How do I structure capital and cultivate the capability to steward it across generations?”
I would like to add two more important changes to this perspective.
First, believers must sow God’s Word into the hearts of their heirs. This is the greatest legacy anyone can pass down. Wealth may come and go, but a life rooted in God’s truth provides wisdom, direction, and stability across generations.
Second, legacy planning should go beyond ensuring that our future generations have enough. It should also consider how we can contribute to society so that others may have enough too. True stewardship is not only about preservation, but also about impact.
Of course, some may argue, “That’s not my problem, it belongs to society or the government.” This may have been our thinking before knowing Christ. But as believers, our perspective must change.
The Lord calls us to care for the needy. It is not optional, it is part of our calling. It is one way we demonstrate our love for our neighbors and reflect God’s love to the society from which we derive our wealth.
This mindset should not be limited to the wealthy. It applies to every one of us. The Lord never said that caring for the needy is only for the rich, but for all who love Him.
May this be a reminder for us to build not just wealth, but a lasting legacy of faith, love, and stewardship.
May you and your family be richly blessed by the love of the Lord.
Blessings,
David Poh
